A semi fell off an Interstate 25 overpass and onto a car crossing underneath the interstate on Belleview Avenue on Saturday morning.
Diesel fuel, oil and glass littered the roadway as rescue crews pulled a driver from a car crushed, in some places, to a height of 6 inches.
Both the driver of the truck and the driver of the Lexus were taken by ambulance to Swedish Medical Center, said Lt. Dave Fischer of the Greenwood Village Police Department.
The driver of the truck, 50-year-old Antonio Rodriguez, was treated for injuries and released.
The Lexus driver was Sidney Levine, 78, of Greenwood Village. Details on his injuries and condition were not available.
Lashonda Smith witnessed the accident from the Bank One Building parking lot just a few hundred feet from the overpass.
“It was intense, like the truck was falling from the sky,” she said. “I heard the truck’s tires screeching before it fell, so it sounded like he was trying to stop.”
Greenwood Village police began receiving 911 calls at 10:56 a.m., with many of the witnesses reporting a large explosion.
Cassy Huntsman was working at the Diamond Shamrock gas station a quarter-mile west of the accident on Belleview when she heard what she described as a bomb.
“I couldn’t see what happened from where I was at, but I heard it and knew something bad happened,” she said. “I immediately called 911 to make sure everyone was OK.”
Investigators closed I-25 northbound for 20 minutes to gather evidence.
Belleview remained closed from the interstate east to DTC Parkway until 4:30 p.m.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated, Fischer said.
