“Sisters” offers a more positive take on African society

Too many features and documentaries about Africa focus on poverty, death and destruction, without searching for the middle-class heroes that can be the building blocks of a lasting society.

“Sisters in Law” breaks out by following the daily travails of two women serving as prosecutor and judge in a traditionally Muslim village. Filmmakers Kim Longinotto and Florence Ayis watch with intimately placed cameras as Vera Ngassa and Beatric Ntuba take on touchy local issues ranging from abusive parents to women’s rights. See “Sisters in Law” at 9:30 p.m. at the Starz FilmCenter.

The second of the Colorado Filmmakers Showcases takes you through shorts with subjects as various as gay cowboys (no, it’s not “Brokeback Mountain”) and Afro-Cuban musicians. Shorts are a great way to see local talent – if they’re good, they leave you hungry for more, and if they’re not so good, they’re over soon. Catch the Showcase II at 6:30 p.m., Starz FilmCenter.
