Hays, Kan. – Despite high winds Saturday, pheasant hunters generally enjoyed good hunting in western Kansas during the weekend season opener.

“Factoring in the weather, the vast majority of reports from the west were pretty good, much as we expected,” said Randy Rodgers, primary biologist with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. “Even those who didn’t kill a lot of birds saw plenty.”

Hunters reported considerably improved populations in the northwest, good around St. Francis, even better farther east toward Oberlin and Norton.

“Our surveys indicated we were up 40 to 50 percent,” Rodgers said. “Maybe it’s even better than that.”
