Who: Nancy, Matt, Jay and Chris Sayre
Where: The Meeting House, Waitangi Treaty Grounds, Bay of Islands, New Zealand
Out and about: The Maori influence is evident throughout most of New Zealand. This Meeting House was shared by all Maori tribes. Carvings depict ancestors. Removal of shoes conveys respect for sacred ground. Don’t miss a Maori hangi (cultural feast) either.
Travel tip: Exploring the north and south island of New Zealand can be done in 3 to 4 weeks with lots of historic, cultural, and outdoor adventures. There’s great food, fabulous terrain (glaciers, caves, fiords), interesting sights, and friendly people. Driving on the left is relatively easy -except for the one lane bridges. It’s a great first international trip for kids.
