Nearly 1 million travelers are expected to use Denver International Airport next week, making it the busiest Thanksgiving week ever.

Some 900,000 passengers used DIA during Thanksgiving week last year, and this year’s traffic levels are trending about 2.5 percent higher, according to the airport.

Airport officials hope 3,400 new parking spaces in a remote lot will alleviate the parking problems that plagued travelers last year. The expansion of the Pikes Peak lot, which travelers must take a shuttle to and from, is expected to open in time for Thanksgiving travelers.

“There should not be any problems with parking this year,” said DIA spokesman Chuck Cannon.

The airport also opened a new $3-per-hour short-term parking area this year. It’s accessible by following the “Arrivals” signs to Level 4 and turning into the lot.

Officials also have scheduled entertainment next week in various areas of the airport.

Transportation Security Administration and airport officials advised holiday travelers to be in the airport lobby – not still searching for a parking spot – at least 90 minutes before their flights, or earlier for travel during peak traffic times from 7 to 10:30 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m.

But they also warned passengers not to arrive too early – because those arriving four hours in advance might crowd lines for others.

Travelers should remember that lighters, firearms and weapons are not allowed in carry-on items and that gifts should not be wrapped.

Thanksgiving travel flights are booked at around 90 percent of capacity, according to United and Frontier Airlines. United spokeswoman Robin Urbanski advised travelers to check on the status of their flights before leaving for the airport and to check in online or at a kiosk at the airport.
