Hayden Smith’s layup with 33 seconds remaining gave No. 8-ranked Metro State a 65-64 victory over Westmont on Saturday night in the Comfort Inn Downtown Denver Classic men’s basketball tournament at the Auraria Events Center.
The Roadrunners (2-0) trailed 64-63 with 51 seconds left in the game, after Westmont’s Tyler Dutton scored on a layup. But the Roadrunners pressed the pace, and Greg Muth assisted on Smith’s two- point game-winner.
Westmont (2-1) created three shots during the final four seconds, but none fell.
It was Metro State’s 41st consecutive home victory.
Drew Williamson scored 27 points to lead the Roadrunners and Michael Bahl contributed 14. Westmont was led by Dutton’s 16 points, while Kevin Bartel scored 12.
Adams State 60, Lubbock Christian 47
Adams State came from behind to beat Lubbock (Texas) Christian in Alamosa. The Grizzlies trailed by 11 points at halftime, but they outscored the Chaps 38-14 in the second half. Greg Baker scored a game-high 15 for the hosts.
Women
Wyoming 47, Sacramento State 35
Wyoming won in Laramie with the help of Erin Hicks and Hanna Zavecz. Each finished with nine points.
Megan McGuffey added eight points off the bench.
Metro State 87, Black Hills State 53
Metro State defeated Black Hills State at the Al Kaly Shrine Classic in Pueblo. The Roadrunners scored 42 points off 29 turnovers by Black Hills.
