In June, somebody out there bought a lottery ticket in Arvada – and presumably stuck it in a pocket or a purse or a glove compartment and forgot all about it.
Now would be a good time to go looking for that ticket because somebody out there has more than $4 million coming if he or she would just step up and claim it.
And time is running out.
Colorado Lottery spokesman Tom Cargal said one ticket matched all six numbers for the June 8 Colorado Lotto game, but nobody has come forward to claim the $4.58 million prize.
After Dec. 5, those winning numbers – 2, 6, 7, 9, 20, 21 – will win exactly nothing because the 180-day period to claim the prize will expire.
Cargal said it’s rare, but not unheard of, for Lotto prizes to go unclaimed.
Since 1989, 13 Colorado Lotto jackpots totaling $30 million have gone unclaimed, including $7.5 million in 2003 and two $2 million prizes in 2004.
Cargal said the winning ticket was bought in Arvada, but he would not specify where because that information is part of the verification process.
The jackpot’s cash value, $2.3 million, which is 50 percent of the advertised prize, will be given to the state Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation, the Conservation Trust Fund and Great Outdoors Colorado.
Cargal said Colorado Lottery is also waiting on a winning ticket sold in the Littleton area from the Oct. 19 Powerball game. The deadline to claim the $853,492 Powerball prize is April 17.
