Not-so-Big 12

Finally! A weaker group top to bottom than the Rockies’ baseball division.

Very likely Texas will end up as the only ranked team in the top 25. But then what other conference could boast a 70-3 final score in its “championship” game?

No honor here

Who would want to watch the Colorado Buffs play in a bowl game after the Iowa State, Nebraska and Texas games? It is not an honor, but an embarrassment to the CU fans.

Humiliating results

The 70-3 humiliation that Texas heaped upon Colorado results in Colorado’s coach’s removal.

What’s wrong with this picture? A few years back, the Nebraska coach administered a similar humiliation on the coach at Minnesota, who lost his job. The real goat in this scene is the Texas coach who could have been a gentleman and started really early putting in substitutes, thus giving them playing time. But, no, that isn’t what gets rewarded.

The Nebraska coach wasn’t scolded for his brutish conduct. Instead, they named a street after him and sent him to Congress. Maybe they thought he would be in like company there.

Go ahead and reward and applaud behavior like this, but don’t refer to it as sport.

Broncos still in need

All of the Broncos’ losses this season are unacceptable losses. They nearly gave away a few other games.

A championship team does not lose to the Dolphins. A championship team does not give away a game like it did to the Giants.

The Broncos had two championship teams in 1997 and ’98 because they beat the Chiefs at Arrowhead.

The record may look better than previous years, but the problems are still there: costly penalties, inability to gain points off of turnovers at crucial moments, total failures on both sides of the ball at critical moments late in games. The Broncos still are not good enough to beat the teams they need to beat to be a championship-caliber team. (Indianapolis looms yet again in Denver’s postseason path.)

After six years, there has to be some accountability. I say what I said before. If he does not win two playoff games this year, Shanahan must go.

Especially if he loses to the Colts again.

Vintage whiners

It would do me good, in my declining years, to not have to listen to Champ “Toast” Bailey and Al “Houdini” Wilson whine about their teammates, the refs, the weather, the field, etc. after a Broncos’ loss. And yes, that’s “Toast” for getting burned so often and “Houdini” for disappearing in big games.

That kind of nonsense reminds me of Jashon Sykes after a loss at CU, badmouthing the kicker for a miss after Jashon had missed numerous tackles.

Guys, if you are really stars and Pro Bowl-quality players, step up and prove it, or at least shut up around the microphones, would you?
