Tim McGraw, the anchor of a Douglas County High School offensive line that led the Huskies to their first state championship, was named The Denver Post’s Gold Helmet Award winner Sunday during halftime of the Broncos-Ravens game at Invesco Field at Mile High.
McGraw, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound center, is the 55th winner of the state’s longest-running prep award, which honors the top senior football player, scholar and citizen.
“I’m just so thankful for this,” McGraw said.
He is just beginning his college search in earnest, and the Ivy League’s Yale University has shown interest in him.
McGraw was part of the Broncos’ annual salute to high school football.
On the weekend after the state’s first championship games at Invesco Field, where Douglas County won Class 5A and ThunderRidge ruled in 4A, the Broncos featured two other segments.
Representatives of the state champions – Douglas County, ThunderRidge, Florence (Class 3A), Holy Family (2A), Limon (1A), Merino (8-man) and Idalia (6-man) – were honored, as were the Broncos schoolboy coaches of the week from the 2005 regular season.
