Heading to the sweet Montana pastures from the panhandle of Texas back in 1866, cowboys carved out a spot on the lower bank of the South Platte River to resupply and called it Brush. Although the Texas-Montana Trail is lost to the ages, Brush is still a decent place for the modern-day traveler to provision. There are plenty of restaurants and a handful of independent retailers, a history museum and several buildings on the National Register of Historic Places – not to mention all the lakes, reservoirs and state wildlife areas to explore within about 25 miles of downtown.
