Lynx story goes national
The Colorado Division of Wildlife’s lynx reintroduction project is featured in the January issue of National Geographic Magazine. Written by Colorado-based freelancer Daniel Glick, the extended article brings to life the effort begun in February 1999 and continued through last May.
Sportsmen rejoice
Under fire from hunters, anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts, two congressmen last week abandoned a scheme to offer for sale millions of acres of Western public lands. A provision sponsored by Reps. Jim Gibbons (R-Nev.) and Richard Pombo (R-Calif.) would have enabled mining companies and real estate companies to convert old mining claims to private use. Gibbons, not incidentally, is a former mining attorney. Fearing a loss of access and destruction of habitat, more than 750 groups representing sportsmen and conservationists urged defeat for the measure.
