Boise, Idaho – Dan Hawkins said he will take a short break before heading to Boulder next week to begin his duties as Colorado’s football coach.
His plan is to have his assistant coaches in town without him Friday for an initial series of meetings. He will have a conference call with the coaches today.
Hawkins confirmed Wednesday that his new staff will include current CU assistants Darian Hagan and Brian Cabral. It also will likely include Boise State wide receivers coach Steve Smyte. Hawkins said he has one slot open on his staff.
“We’ve set our schedule for recruiting next week,” Hawkins said. “I’m excited to go. I love Boise State, but I’m excited about this Buffaloes thing. There’s great tradition. It’s a great school.
“I know there’s a lot of manure that’s been floating around, but I’ll tell you what, I’ve got a great crew on board and I’m excited to go back there and get the state fired up. I’m fired up about that.”
Hawkins said he wanted to spend some time with his family and won’t be in town until next Wednesday night. He’ll have his staff together the next day to follow up plans for the recruiting period, which begins Monday.
Currently, Colorado has nine known commitments.
“We’ll be like recruits, too,” he said. “We’re going to try to put in three, good, hard days (during the first recruiting weekend of Jan. 6-8). I’m going to get to Colorado and see some of those guys that are interested in CU and have committed and get those guys taken care of first.
“I want to make sure we do a good job with those guys.”
