DeBerry to stay with Falcons

Football coach Fisher DeBerry confirmed Tuesday that he would be back for his 23rd season with Air Force.

DeBerry had left the question of his return unanswered after the end of the Falcons’ 4-7 season.

Athletic director Hans Mueh had said all along he did not expect DeBerry to retire.

“I want to quiet any speculation about my future, and let everyone know that I’m remaining as coach of the Fighting Falcons,” DeBerry said in a statement. “We’ve been disappointed with the outcome of the last two years, and we want to commit all of our energies to help the program get back on track.”

DeBerry announced Capt. Jemal Singleton, head coach of the academy’s junior varsity team, would join the varsity staff as running backs coach. Singleton played for Air Force from 1996-98.
