A grass fire just south of Lyons was driven by high winds Tuesday and consumed roughly 30 acres of private and Boulder County parks land and threatened two buildings before dozens of firefighters from various districts contained it.
The fire was reported at about 2:05 p.m. in a field of grass and cottonwood trees southeast of U.S. 36 and Colorado 66, along the St. Vrain River, said Dave Boo ton, emergency services supervisor for the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
Winds averaging 40 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, spread the flames, Booton said, before firefighters from several area volunteer, county and state agencies got the fire under control about 3:30 p.m.
Two buildings threatened by the flames were saved and there were no reports of injuries.
About 10 acres continued to burn slowly late Tuesday, and fire crews planned to monitor it overnight before returning to stamp out the remaining flames in the morning, Booton said.
