New Hotel Adara brings intimate style to a popular ski area dominated by chains

The large hotels of Whistler have a smaller competitor in their midst, the new Hotel Adara, a 41-room spot characterized by natural materials, including wood and stone, to blend in with the surrounding landscape, and rooms designed to incorporate unique elements such as “floating” fireplaces made to look as though they are suspended in midair. The hotel is only a few yards from the Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb

gondolas and the Whistler Conference Center, and houses a restaurant and health club. Hotel Adara, 4122 Village Green, 866-50-ADARA, adarahotel.com

Mucho Gusto has mucho to recommend; lamb tacos, low cost make for repeat visits

A wonderful little restaurant just off Alameda Avenue, Mucho Gusto has brought us back four or five times just for the lamb tacos en barbacoa ($9.95). These delightful soft tacos come in a rich barbacoa sauce, and paired with black beans sprinkled with cheese and rice, there’s plenty for dinner or lunch with room left for a fabulous dessert, such as almond flan or margarita pie. Or try camarones empanisados con coco (five coconut shrimp with chipotle mayonnaise) – heaven. There are several rooms strung together, painted in soft pastels, and chef/owner Alex Castro cooks every night. In a town that can be hurried and expensive, this is an island of tranquillity with sublime food. Mucho Gusto, 839 Paseo de Peralta, 505-955-8402
