The man responsible for Vince Young being at Texas was glowing Thursday.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled,” Broncos tight ends coach Tim Brewster said.

He recruited Young out of Houston’s Madison High School to the Austin campus when Brewster was an assistant coach at the school. Young was his last recruit for the Longhorns.

Brewster was beside himself after Young led Texas to the national championship Wednesday night with a 41-38 victory over USC.

“I had a great sense of pride watching Vince and so many of the other great kids I had a part in recruiting to that school,” Brewster said. “To see them develop into national champions was amazing.”

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan also was pulling for the Longhorns. Both of his children graduated from Texas, and his son, Kyle, now an assistant with Tampa Bay, played football there.

“That game was good for all of football,” Shanahan said.

Interview time

Broncos offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak will spend the next two days interviewing for head coaching jobs.

Kubiak meets with a Houston contingent, including former Broncos coach Dan Reeves, today, and then with Detroit Lions officials on Saturday. Both interviews will be conducted in Denver.

After this week, according to NFL guidelines, Kubiak can’t interview until Denver’s season is over. St. Louis might interview Kubiak after the Broncos’ season if it hasn’t completed its search yet.

The Texans are looking for an offensive-minded coach, and Kubiak is from Houston. It could also help that Reeves, his former Broncos coach, is a consultant with the Texans.

No harm intended

In the second quarter of Denver’s 23-7 victory at San Diego on Saturday, Chargers quarterback Drew Brees was injured making contact with Broncos defensive tackle Gerard Warren while they were scrambling after Brees’ fumble at the Chargers’ goal line.

Brees suffered a torn labrum on the play. He required surgery that will keep him out four months.

After the game, Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson told The San Diego Union-Tribune that Warren’s play was legal but somewhat dirty. Thursday, Warren defended himself. He said he understood Tomlinson sticking up for his teammate but said the play was clean.

“I hated to see (Brees) get hurt, but it was a clean play,” Warren said.

Carswell honored

Injured offensive lineman Dwayne Carswell has been voted by his teammates as the Broncos’ recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award. The award goes to a player on each NFL team who has shown courage or sportsmanship.

Carswell was lost for the season when he suffered serious injuries in an auto accident on Oct. 27. He plans to try to play next season.

Footnotes

The Broncos practiced just 30 minutes Thursday. The players will have the weekend off before preparing in earnest for their Jan. 14 AFC divisional playoff game at Invesco Field at Mile High. … Neither running back Mike Anderson nor defensive end Trevor Pryce received votes for the NFL comeback player of the year award, which was shared by Carolina’s Steve Smith and New England’s Tedy Bruschi.
