Hammond out, Schakel in at UCCS

University of Colorado-Colorado Springs second-year men’s basketball coach Lance Hammond was released Tuesday and replaced by former Mesa State coach Doug Schakel, who is coming out of retirement.

“The program was not going in the direction that the athletic administration felt it needed to be going,” athletic director Stephen W. Kirkham said. Hammond was 2-38.

Schakel, a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Hall of Famer who won six RMAC titles at Mesa State from 1978-96, is out of the state and won’t start until next week. Kirkham and assistant coaches Kevin Conboy and Rodney Yates will guide UCCS tonight at Colorado College.

Watson takes job with Huskers

Former Colorado offensive coordinator Shawn Watson has accepted the tight end-coaching position at Nebraska. Watson, who directed CU’s offense the past six seasons, has known Nebraska coach Bill Callahan since the two were assistants at Illinois during the 1980s.
