Lakewood – Aromous Robinson was his own kind of sweet Tuesday night.
Moving at a speed somewhere between mellow and hypnotizing, the Bear Creek senior scored 39 points to lead the depleted Bears to a 66-59 Class 5A nonleague victory over Range- view.
“He’s so in control,” Bears coach Steven Hyatt said of Robinson.
Robinson had 22 points at halftime, outscoring the Raiders for much of the first half, and picked up 11 points in the fourth quarter from the free-throw line. Robinson opened up a compact Raiders’ man defense with his outside shooting before burning the visitors in transition.
“He really lulls you to sleep,” Raiders coach Shawn Palmer said of Robinson. “He just knows what his strengths are and he plays to them. He made us look silly out there.”
The Bears (9-4), playing without starters Andre Adams, Cameron Ross and Brandon Runkle, got points from just four players and only three starters.
Robinson connected on four 3-pointers, grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots while 6-foot-7 senior David Nelson had 16 points and 12 rebounds as the Bears won for the third time in five games.
“We’re struggling a little bit right now,” Robinson said of the Bears’ depleted ranks. “It’s kind of hard out there, but players are helping me step it up.”
The Raiders (9-3), playing in their first game since the winter break, shot 34 percent and were 1-for-16 from 3-point range.
Senior Tim Koralewski scored 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds and Beau Harris had 16 points and seven rebounds to lead the Raiders, who lost for just the second time to an in-state opponent.
