In a crowded East High School cafeteria, some Denver teenagers made it clear Tuesday that they want the right to leave school to eat lunch.
About 125 students showed up at Denver Public Schools’ first forum on Superintendent Michael Bennet’s “Denver Plan.” He is considering closing campuses during the day to avoid post-lunch truancies.
“It’s like punishing us before we do anything,” said Mussie Zeremariam, a junior at George Washington High.
A series of community forums are scheduled for residents to comment on the plan’s far-reaching changes in the way the district operates.
Happy Haynes, assistant to the superintendent, said she thought the forum was productive. “These are all very good questions,” she said of concerns about a closed-campus lunch.
