The Children’s Museum of Denver will be closed today after a fire late Wednesday night.

The fire, which broke out shortly before midnight, damaged the north exterior wall. It was contained before it could spread inside, but there was significant smoke damage to the first and second floor and to exhibits. The cause isn’t yet known.

While the inside is closed for cleaning today and Friday, the museum will continue to host scheduled activities outside on its plaza. The museum’s interior will reopen on Saturday.

Recyclable materials used in the Assembly Plant exhibit and paints in the Art a la Carte attraction have to be thrown away as a result of the fire.

Museum employees are requesting donations of toilet paper rolls, tissue boxes milk jugs and other recyclables, along with water-based paint, which can be dropped off at the museum.

Call the Children’s Museum at 303-433-7444 for more information.
