CC hockey trounced by Wisconsin

The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team, ranked No. 1 in the nation, scored six goals in the first period and rolled to a 9-1 victory over No. 5 Colorado College on Saturday in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game. The visiting Badgers’ (18-2-2, 13-1-2 WCHA) first four goals came on power plays and they led 4-0 after 12 minutes of the first. Andrew Joudrey and Robbie Earl scored two goals apiece for Wisconsin. Marty Sertich scored the only goal for the Tigers (17-8-1, 9-6-1 WCHA).

Les Reaney had two goals and three assists to lead Niagara to a 7-2 win over Air Force in a College Hockey America game. The teams split the two-game series and Niagara (11-10-1, 6-3-1 CHA) remained in a tie for first place with Bemidji State. Air Force (5-12-1, 3-5 CHA) is in fourth place.

Three Skyhawks invited to MLS draft

Major League Soccer invited three Fort Lewis College men’s soccer players to its January professional draft, Skyhawks coach Jeremy Gunn said Saturday.

Nick Clark, formerly of Durango High School, Bryan Eisenbraun, a Green Mountain High School graduate, and Cole Sweetser, of North Richland Hills, Texas, will attend the MLS draft Friday in Philadelphia. The trio helped Fort Lewis win the NCAA Division II national championship in December to cap an undefeated season at 22-0-1.

Denver sweeps dual swim meet

The University of Denver swimming and diving teams defeated South Dakota State in a dual meet at El Pomar Natatorium. The Pioneer women (8-1) defeated the Jackrabbits 138-72, while the men (8-3) posted a 131-89 victory.

The DU women were led by Harmony Zeller, formerly of Arvada West High School, who won the 1,000-meter freestyle with a time of 10 minutes, 38.63 seconds. Men’s team diver Aaron Feight, an Arapahoe High School graduate, swept the 1- and 3-meter events with scores of 356.77 and 402.67, respectively – both school records.
