NEW STAMP UNVEILED

Denver-raised actress honored

Tonight at the National Western’s first-ever Martin Luther King Jr. African-American Heritage Rodeo, the U.S. Postal Service will unveil the newest Black Heritage series stamp, featuring Hattie McDaniel, who grew up in Denver and was the first African-American to win an Academy Award, for Best Supporting Actress in “Gone With the Wind.”

The new stamp will be available Jan. 26.

FIRST RODEO

Deer Trail started it all

Deer Trail, in eastern Arapahoe County, was an early cow town thanks to the Kansas Pacific Railway, which came through in 1869 and was soon followed by a depot and a stockyard.

Thousands of cattle, horses and cowboys poured in, and on July 4, 1869, men from various camps made bets on the best rider, roper and wrangler – what many consider to be the first rodeo in the United States.

An Englishman named Emil Gardenshire rode Montana Blizzard for 15 minutes and was named “Champion Bronco Buster of the Plains.”

SOLID REMINDER

Western art highlights bison

“On the Wind” is a new 10-by-13-foot, 3,000-pound bronze North American bison, commissioned from renowned cowboy artist T.D. Kelsey.

James J. Volker made the public art possible, and it will be displayed at the Colorado History Museum’s public plaza near the corner of 13th Avenue and Broadway in Denver.

T.D. Kelsey is the featured artist of this year’s Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale at the National Western.
