DID YOU KNOW

Boncarbo

Boncarbo, in Las Animas County, was established in 1915 and named by Abe Thompson, an official of the American Smelting and Refining Co. The name was an adaptation of the French “bon charbon,” meaning good coal.

Several other places in the state are also named for coal or carbon, including Carbon Peak in Gunnison County, many Coal Creeks, the towns of Coal Creek and Coaldale, and several peaks called Coal Mountain and Coalmont.

REGIONAL NOTES

AURORA

Honors for MLK contest winners

The Aurora Public Library will honor select students who depicted their “life’s blueprint” in a drawing or essay in recognition of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

The awards ceremony will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library/Municipal Services Center, 9898 E. Colfax Ave.

The theme for this year’s contest is “What Is Your Life’s Blueprint,” selected in honor of King’s 1967 speech to Barrett High School students.

Third- through eighth-graders from several Aurora public schools participated in this year’s contest. The Heritage Christian Center youth choir will offer a musical rendition of highlights of King’s speeches.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Library houses the John and Edna Mosley African-American Cultural Collection, dedicated at last year’s ceremony. John Mosley, a former member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, and Edna Mosley, who served on the Aurora City Council for 12 years, plan to attend this year’s ceremony.

The contest is sponsored by the Friends of the Aurora Public Library. For more information, call 303-739-1943.
