The Barrel Man went to Blake Street Tavern (2401 Blake St.) Wednesday to eat a Roethlis-burger, named for the Steelers QB due in town for a game Sunday. The headline: BM finished it and he didn’t die.
It was created in Peppi’s, a Pittsburgh restaurant, and it’s made with four ounces of hamburger, six ounces of hot sausage, grilled onions, topped with scrambled eggs and two slices of American cheese and served on a 10-inch Italian roll. All for $7.77. The bar also has some Iron City Beer on hand to help you wash it down.
Says tavern owner Chris Fuselier. “We already have some young guns calling who say they’ll bring us down. I say OK, fine. But you’re going to end up puking.”
Who is this for exactly?
“Anyone. It’s just to be hospitable,” says Fuselier.
The Barrel Man may have indigestion, but at least he has a ticket to Sunday’s game. Rocky the Leprechaun, the pesky Denver mascot whose giggle can stop a parade, is ticketless. He even took out an ad in the “tickets” section of the Post-News classifieds. He called me back to say a few fans have contacted him, but he still doesn’t have a ticket. “I want to buy one,” he says. “I just need to get my little fanny in the door.”
I like to watch
Meanwhile, where should you go to watch the game? Here’s a hint: Stay home if you want to see and hear what’s happening. If you’re at Invesco or in a bar, you don’t get to see or hear much.
For Broncos curmudgeons, you can go to Brix, which takes pride in never showing any sports on its TV. Last Saturday, the sign on the door read: “Brix – Not a sports bar. Good food, wine, chat. But a fun bar!” Then there was the Broncos logo with an “X” through it.
Wheels
Pat Sajak and Vanna White and the “Wheel of Fortune” crew will be at the Lecture Hall of the Colorado Convention Center March 24, 25 and 26 – taping three weeks of shows out of Denver. Yes, they tape five shows a day. Contestants have been chosen in tryouts last spring and fall – but plenty of free tix will be available for audience members. Deets will be on KMGH-Ch. 7 starting next week. The ABC affiliate airs “Wheel” at 6:30 p.m. weekdays. The Denver episodes should air in May.
Nothing like a dame
Dame Edna’s back at the Buell through Jan. 29, filled with insults for all of us here in Denver.
To one woman she said, “I’m trying to think of a word to describe what you’re wearing. … Affordable!”
As for the empty seats on opening night, she said they weren’t really empty. They belonged to subscribers from Cherry Hills who buy blocks of seats – “And then they die.”
