Kathy Sabine knows where to stand and, more important, where to step.

The KUSA-Channel 9 weather-guesser breaks in another saddle pal for live coverage of the Junior Livestock Champions auction at the National Western Stock Show (6:30 tonight).

Sabine and first-time co-host Gregg “Hoss” Moss, Channel 9’s business reporter, frolic with cows and rich people to bring us the thrill of the sale as young growers make big bucks off their steers, lambs, hogs and goats.

This is old cow-hat to Sabine, who raises horses, was the Truckee Rodeo Queen (she was 14, OK?), was a barrel racer and has done the auction for the past seven years. “It’s great! I love it!” she gushes. “It’s fast-paced, and it really does help the kids in terms of scholarship money. It’s a very emotional event.”

Sabine will be up close and personal with the livestock while Moss works the crowd, interviewing winning bidders. She can’t wait. “I love the animals, I love the rodeo, I love the cowboys, and I love the horses.”

She even loves Moss, whom she jokingly calls “a city slicker.” It’s his first time out of the chute – he’s buying a hat, “a custom-made one” – but, he says, “I know the smell of money anywhere.”

California bound

Enid Goldstein, one of the first voices heard on talk station KNRC 1150-AM when it went on the air in 2002, is heading “home” to Sacramento.

Goldstein, a liberal commentator, is going home in more ways than one. She’ll be doing an afternoon show on KCTC-AM, now an Air America Radio affiliate.

She expects to be on the air by Jan. 30.
