Andrew Preston, a linebacker at Arapahoe in Centennial, has orally committed to San Diego State, according to his high school coach, Mike Campbell.
Preston, 6-feet-1, 205 pounds, also played running back in leading the Warriors to an 8-3 record, second place in the Class 5A National League, and a berth in the state preliminaries. He was 5A all-state honorable mention by The Denver Post.
He may soon be joined by B.J. Williams, 6-3, 215, a linebacker at Eaglecrest also in Centennial. Williams is deciding between San Diego State and Colorado State, according to Eaglecrest coach Tom Doherty. Williams was 5A first-team all-state in helping the Raptors to a three-way tie for second place in the Centennial League and an appearance in the state preliminaries.
Three others of note made their commitments known: Niwot’s Cody Buck will attend Army, Cherry Creek’s Darin McDonald will play at Idaho State and ThunderRidge’s Eric Moats will head to the Air Force Academy.
Buck, 6-3, 212, an outside linebacker for the 3A Cougars, had his choice of service academies, but felt most comfortable at Army, according to Niwot coach Ron Tesone. Niwot finished runner-up in the Tri-Valley, and Buck was first-team all-state.
McDonald, a 6-2, 180, defensive back-wide receiver for the 5A Bruins, drew interest from, among others, Air Force, and also may get consideration for major-league baseball’s draft as an outfielder. He is the younger brother of former Bruins star Darnell McDonald and was honorable mention all-state.
Moats, a 6-0, 175, wide receiver, was instrumental in ThunderRidge’s back-to-back 4A titles. By the time he graduates, he will have lettered 14 times: four each in football, basketball and baseball, and twice in track. He was honorable mention all-state.
Also, Colorado School of Mines received a commitment from D’Evelyn’s Tom Kastens, a wide receiver and 3A honorable mention all-state.
National signing day is Wednesday, and Colorado has 33 known Division I-A commitments.
