The Beast
Boulder’s Adam Avery is forever pushing the beer envelope. With Avery Brewing Co. beers named The Maharaja, The Kaiser, The Czar, etc. he’s pushing marketing and brewing limits.
Now comes The Beast, an aptly named Belgian-style grand cru that has more of everything, including a price tag. One 12-ounce bottle will cost you $7.
A deep copper color that almost glows gives way to a bouquet of fruit like mandarin orange, pineapple, raisin and plums. Even the most seasoned beer drinker will have a time sorting out the multitude of flavors. At 14.9 percent alcohol (by volume), it’s one of the biggest beers on the shelf.
No matter. It could be split four ways and still satisfy everyone’s thirst for an after-dinner sipper, not unlike a brandy.
The brewery says The Beast should live in your cellar for 10 years or more. “It’s defintely a crazy, crazy beer,” says Avery.
