With all the Oscar talk, it’s time to start thinking about Oscar parties.
The Denver International Film Society’s Party With Oscar party comes down March 5 at the Cable Center at 2000 Buckley Blvd.
It’ll start with a Palm Springs cocktail party in a salute to the ’50s. The atrium holds hundreds of TV monitors on the walls – all tuned to the Oscars. And there’s a theater at the Cable Center for people who take their Oscars seriously.
“We’ll always have this mix of people who want to socialize and have cocktails and people who want to watch every minute of it,” says DIFS flack Britta Erickson. “The Cable Center is the perfect place for the party.”
Ch. 7’s Bill Clarke will emcee, as usual. Two new elements this year: An open bar and a seated dinner from Three Tomatoes.
As for Oscar, Denver winner Donna Dewey will bring hers so you can touch it and have your picture taken with it.
The party is chaired by Dr. Dean Prina and Betsy Leighton – $175 gets you in. Check it out at denverfilm.org.
Denver’s Oscar buzz
Country Dinner Playhouse and Boulder Dinner Theatre alum Amy Adams woke up to an Oscar nomination Tuesday for best performance by an actress in a supporting role in “Junebug.”
Adams called her mom first, who was working in a Starbucks in Colorado. USA Today quotes Adams, “She had her phone waiting in her pocket, and I heard all the people in the store yell. It was great.”
Former East High grad Don Cheadle (whose parents and kid brother still live in Denver) was passed over for best actor in “Crash,” but he’s happy anyway. Cheadle produced “Crash” and is generally credited for getting this insightful movie made – and it did land an Oscar nomination for best picture.
Denver-based HDNet and HDNet Films are owned by Dallas Mavs owner Mark Cuban, and won a nomination for best feature documentary with “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room.”
Corrections
Not that we never make a mistake – but hats off to the Denver Daily News. It earlier won the correction of the year from a website, but it gets a dubious achievement of the year award from Esquire this month as one of the four best corrections of ’05. Again, it was printed that: “It was not the author’s intention to call New Jersey ‘Jew Jersey.”‘ Ouch.
