Gale Norton, secretary of the Interior; Fran Mainella, director of the National Park Service; and Sen. Ken Salazar are just a few of the speakers scheduled for Colorado Preservation Inc.’s historic-preservation conference Feb. 8-10 at 1770 Sherman Street Event Complex in Denver.
“Saving Places 2006: Building on the Past” is the theme for the ninth annual conference. Daily workshops will cover such topics as sustainable design; heritage tourism; and what happens after disaster strikes, which focuses on the efforts being made to rehabilitate areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
The conference also will place a special emphasis on the 100th anniversary of the Antiquities Act, the 40th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, and Mesa Verde National Park’s 100th birthday.
A fundraiser for education programs at Mesa Verde will be 6-9 p.m. Feb. 10. A silent auction will include rare Native American pottery and jewelry. Artifacts from Mesa Verde, dating from the 13th century, will be on display. Cost of this Centennial Celebration is $75.
