Nevada’s Nick Fazekas, a graduate of Arvada’s Ralston Valley High School, was named the Western Athletic Conference men’s basketball player of the week for the second time this season. Fazekas scored 23 points and had 11 rebounds Thursday as Nevada defeated Louisiana Tech 65-53. He led the Wolf Pack to a 90-81 win over New Mexico State on Saturday by scoring 36 points.
Metro State women’s soccer adds Kiwi recruit
The Metro State women’s soccer team added a recruit to its roster Monday after Petria Rennie, a defender from Auckland, New Zealand, signed a letter of intent to play for the Roadrunners, coach Danny Sanchez said.
Rennie is a teammate of current Metro State player Anne Ormrod on the New Zealand under-20 national team. Rennie also has made two appearances for the New Zealand women’s senior national team.
She joins Brittany Freel, Becca Horner, Becca Mays, Justine Montoya, Amanda Nance and Jenna Oney as part of Metro State’s 2006 recruiting class. The Roadrunners last season won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships before losing in the quarterfinals of NCAA Division II tournament.
Moniak, Westerman earn RMAC plaudits
Adams State’s Roman Moniak was named the RMAC’s West Division men’s basketball player of the week after scoring 45 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in two victories, 88-73 over New Mexico Highlands and an 80-58 rout against Colorado-Colorado Springs. CSU-Pueblo’s Lauren Westerman earned the honor for the women, her third of the season.
