Longmont – Broomfield’s girls basketball team is full of big shots … or, at least the roster is loaded with players capable of taking and hitting those big shots.
Every time Longmont and Lindsey Moller started to creep in on Broomfield’s lead, there was Caitlan Stem or Deborah Davies or Sophia Rhodes or Katie Calderwood on the scene for a timely basket in the Eagles’ 70-58 victory over Longmont in a Class 4A Northern League game Thursday night to end the regular season for these teams.
“It’s just the way we all are,” Rhodes said. “When we come together as a team we are unstoppable.”
No. 2 Broomfield (18-1, 15-0) clinched the Northern title Tuesday night with a two-point victory over then-undefeated Sterling, and the Eagles won that game and this one without 6-foot-6 freshman Anna Prins, who is out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Rhodes led the Eagles with 19 points, Davies added 15 and Stem hit three 3-pointers for 13. Calderwood finished with nine points and seven rebounds, and Megan Hall came off the bench for eight points.
Moller led all scorers with 20 points, including 16 in the second half, for No. 8 Longmont (14-5, 11-4). Sophia Johnson had 11 points and nine rebounds.
Broomfield led by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter, but the Trojans cut that to a 12-point lead in the final stretch. But the Eagles controlled the game from the start by playing a well-rounded game with a slew of contributors.
“We have a lot of weapons,” Broomfield coach Mike Croell said. “Before Anna went down, we didn’t have one girl score 20 points or more. … On any given night, there are two or three girls that can go off.”
A cold-shooting first quarter (2-for-11) and turnovers slowed Longmont in the first half. Broomfield had a 33-20 lead at the half.
“We had 12 turnovers in the first half, and we got outrebounded in the first half,” Moller said. “I think we picked up our defense in the second half to make it closer.”
