EDGEWATER-LAKEWOOD – A 16-year-old girl was shot, apparently in the leg, Tuesday in what police believe was a gang-related shooting on West 20th Avenue, the border between Edgewater and Lakewood, near Lamar Street, said police spokesman Steve Davis.

The victim was one of four people in a black Volkswagen that was eastbound on 20th about 3:40 p.m. when the car passed a young man walking on the south side of 20th, also eastbound, Davis said. Gang signs were flashed between the pedestrian and those in the car, he said.

The car then turned around to come back west, apparently to take someone in the car home, Davis said.

“We don’t know if he (the pedestrian) thought they were coming back for him,” Davis said, but the young man opened fire, shooting at least three shots and maybe as many as eight, before running from the scene.

One shot hit the girl in the car, Davis said. Two shots struck the brick wall of a home on the northwest corner of 20th and Marshall Street, waking one woman from a nap and startling a man just inside the front door.

The driver of the car drove away to West 22ndcq Avenue and Pierce Street, across the street from Jefferson High School, before summoning help.
