Students from a school set to be closed next year have staged a walk out, intent on having their voices heard by the school board.
The crowd, estimated to be about 60 students accompanied by some family members, left Manual High School this morning to drive to the Denver Public School building at 9th and Grant. The students made signs with slogans such as “Hell no we won’t go,” and “Do you really think you’re helping?”
The DPS board voted 6 – 1 Thursday to close Manual for the 2006-7 school year as part of a reorganization plan.
The students waited outside the building for about two hours in hopes of talking with DPS Superintendent Michael Bennet. However, Bennet was not in the building.
The group left after speaking with another DPS representative.
Attendance at the school has dropped significantly since an experiment introduced in 2001. The school was divided into three separate programs; one focusing on math and science, another on business and government, and a third on the arts.
The school board said Manual High students would get help transferring to other schools.
