The temperature at Denver International Airport fell to a record low of 12 below zero early this morning, after a high Friday of just 12 above.

Wind chills overnight were as cold as 25 degrees below zero.

The temperature will only inch into the teens again today. But the good news for skiers is that it will actually be warmer up in the northern and central mountains. A storm will bring moisture to the southern mountains where winter weather advisories are in effect.

With the temperatures this cold, pet owners are advised to keep their animals indoors. “They’re no more acclimated to this type of brutal cold than we are,” said Paige Orchard with the Aurora Animal Care Division.

The weather map across Colorado showed most temperatures in the single digits, teens and 20s with a few “warm” spots in the 30s Friday.

People up in northern Weld and Kit Carson counties had to contend with wind chill readings that were 20 degrees below zero.

Temperatures will be in the 30s Sunday with the chance for another storm.
