While a major acquisition may be unlikely, one potential name on the Broncos’ wish list in their search for another offensive playmaker could be scratched.
According to reports by KDVR-31 and The Miami Herald on Sunday night, Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams is facing at least a one-year suspension from the NFL for violating the league’s substance abuse policy a fourth time.
Although Williams failed a drug test for a fourth time, it is not believed he tested positive for marijuana, which was the case on three previous occasions.
The Broncos discussed acquiring Williams last month. However, with this latest possible violation, any trade for Williams likely will be shelved.
“Because of the confidential nature of the league’s substance-abuse policy, we can’t comment on any aspect of that program,” Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene told The Miami Herald.
Williams can appeal a violation to the league and had made it through the 2005 season despite being tested 10 times a month, The Herald reported.
Because much of the Broncos’ salary-cap room is being used to re-sign the team’s free agents, there won’t be much room for a major addition. Still, Williams was being considered because Denver had an interest in adding a major offensive cog and his contract could be relatively affordable. He was scheduled to make the league minimum ($560,000) next season.
