Carmelo Anthony may play on an all- star team this year after all.
The Nuggets forward, who just missed the Western Conference cut for the NBA All-Star Game played Sunday in Houston, has been mailed one of 22 invitations by the U.S. Olympic Committee to work out with the U.S. men’s team during its July training camp in Las Vegas, according to a source close to the process. Anthony repeatedly has said that if invited, he would play.
Players will be culled from that pool to participate in the 2006 world championships in Japan and the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The official roster will be released in early March.
Anthony has a chance to erase memories of his time on the 2004 U.S. team that finished with a disappointing bronze medal at the Athens Olympics. Anthony often sat at the end of the team’s bench and was among the players whose attitude U.S. coach Larry Brown criticized.
