A historic home built by the first mayor of Montclair is on the market for $950,000.

Mathias Cochrane platted and promoted Montclair in 1885 and became the town’s first mayor in 1888. Walter von Richthofen, who built the neighborhood’s Richthofen Castle, acquired much of the land in Montclair from Cochrane’s Western Land and Colonization society. He renamed the area “Richthofen’s Montclair” in 1890, according to local historians.

Montclair is now a Denver historic district.

Historians dispute the date Cochrane completed the three-story red-brick home he called “Ardmore Place,” but the city tax assessor’s office shows the home as being completed in 1889.

Homeowners Bob and Amy Mandeau purchased the property in 2001 and have spent about $200,000 on renovations, said listing agent Christina de Barros of Re/Max Masters. The couple is selling the house because of a job transfer.

De Barros will hold an open house at the property at 1304 Olive St. in Denver from 2 to 4 p.m. today.
