A Chicago-based developer has proposed a shopping center in Frederick, potentially adding to the retail boom in northern Colorado.
Town planning director Jennifer Hoffman said Landmark Development has submitted preliminary plans for an outdoor retail center anchored by two big-box stores. The company has 110 acres under contract near Interstate 25 and Colorado 52.
The project will be between 900,000 and 1.3 million square feet, she said.
Frederick town officials anticipate that approvals will be completed by the end of the year and construction could begin next spring.
Plans for the project were first made public by the Frederick Town Council on Thursday night. The town has not determined if public money will be used to support the project.
The proposed mall continues a trend of retail development flying north as developers move to take advantage of the population boom along the I-25 corridor between Denver and Fort Collins.
Last year, developers Poag & McEwen Lifestyle Centers and McWhinney Enterprises opened the 700,000-square-foot Promenade Shops at Centerra at U.S. 34 and I-25 in Loveland.
Other projects under construction in the immediate area include a Furniture Row shopping center in Dacono and an American Furniture Warehouse in Firestone.
Additionally, three shopping centers expected to each be more than 1 million square feet are under construction along I-25 in Westminster, Broomfield and Thornton.
