Deming, New Mexico
St. Clair Winery an oasis in the desert – yes, an unlikely spot for a vineyard
It’s dry and dusty in southern New Mexico, which makes the the gorgeous St. Clair Winery, 68th-largest in the United States, a welcome sight. Hard to believe you’re in Deming; settle in at the modern, comfortable tasting room for an enjoyable hour of tasting some truly extraordinary wines. St. Clair Winery has a good selection of both dry and sweeter wines to choose from, and a nice selection of ports and a couple of champagnes. The Gewurztraminer is one of the best all-around drinkable wines and quite tasty. If the afternoon gets long, it’s a short drive into town to spend the night. The winery also has a tasting room in Albuquerque at 901 Rio Grande Blvd. (505-243-9916).

Cherokee Antique Row keeps it old-school, offers new joint for food
Great prices in great settings. That’s what makes the St. Louis antiques shopping district a real destination. Just five blocks long, Cherokee is a former residential strip crammed with quaint boutiques, which are crammed themselves with wares ranging from high-end furniture to collectible knickknacks. New to the scene: a fun, affordable place to eat called Shangri-La. It’s a breakfast and lunch spot wonderfully overdecorated in colorful beads and hanging lamps. The menu is almost vegetarian, and the Sunday brunch is delicious – and fast enough to get you back on the street shopping. Shangri-La, 2201 Cherokee St., 314-772-8308, theshangriladiner.com
