San Diego – Mohamed Abukar scored a career-high 26 points and Marcus Slaughter added 20 points and nine rebounds Wednesday night as San Diego State routed the Wyoming Cowboys 91-72 to win its first outright Mountain West Conference championship before a sellout crowd of 12,414 at Cox Arena.
The Aztecs (20-8, 13-3 MWC) most recently had won an outright conference title in 1978, when they played in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association. San Diego State finishes its regular season Friday at home against South Dakota State.
Wyoming was leading 15-12 when the Aztecs went on a 32-5 run. They took a 46-24 lead into the second half.
Brandon Ewing scored 14 points to lead Wyoming (12-16, 5-10) and Brad Jones added 13. Justin Williams scored 10 points and blocked five shots.
BYU 77, COLORADO STATE 69
Provo, Utah – Rashaun Broadus scored 11 points in the first half to help Brigham Young lead from buzzer to buzzer and defeat Colorado State.
BYU (19-7, 11-4) has won nine of its past 10 games and five in a row to move into a second-place tie with Air Force in the conference standings.
CSU (15-13, 4-11) had won two straight and three of its past four games before losing.
CSU’s Michael Harrison had game highs in points (17) and rebounds (seven). The Rams finish the regular season Saturday at 1 p.m. against Air Force (23-5, 11-4) at Moby Arena.
NEW MEXICO 47, UNLV 39
Albuquerque – Mark Walters scored 15 points and Joel Box grabbed a season-high 14 rebounds as New Mexico won in a struggle between offense- challenged teams.
New Mexico (17-11, 8-7) missed 13 of its first 16 shots in the second half, yet never trailed during the final 20 minutes. Nevada-Las Vegas (15-12, 9-6) was equally inept, and the 39 points matched the lowest point total in school history.
TCU 69, UTAH 65
Fort Worth, Texas – Chudi Chinweze scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds to lead Texas Christian. The Horned Frogs (6-23, 2-13) trailed 34-32 at halftime and tied the score six times during the second half before taking the lead for good on a free throw by Judson Stubbs with 3:50 left to play. Johnnie Bryant led Utah (12-14, 5-10) with a game-high 19 points.
