About half of University of Colorado alumni and half of Colorado residents in a recent survey said media coverage of CU in the past two years has negatively affected their opinion of the school.

But when asked a separate question about the overall view of the school, the CU-sponsored survey showed about one-third of residents have a negative opinion and about one-third have a positive opinion. Among alumni, 76 percent have a positive opinion of CU.

More than half of alumni polled, 58 percent, said they were unsure whether donations they had given to CU were spent wisely. About 4 percent thought their gifts were not spent wisely, and 38 percent thought they were spent wisely.

The poll included 1,546 prospective students, 2,336 alumni and 401 residents. The survey was part of CU’s contract with public-relations consultant Christopher Simpson.
