Pueblo – With immigration restrictions being considered in Washington and the Colorado legislature, Pueblo Bishop Arthur Tafoya says Roman Catholics must stand on the side of justice and equality for all.

“As Catholic Christians, we are followers of Jesus Christ and we must follow the laws of love and charity, and stand on the side of justice and equality for all. The laws of the Gospel always exceed the laws of the land,” Tafoya said.

The Pueblo Chieftain said Tafoya was specifically referring to a bill that has passed the U.S.House. It would make it illegal to provide assistance to illegal immigrants. Anyone who knowingly “assists, encourages or directs” someone to reside in the U.S. illegally is guilty of alien smuggling and subject to up five years in prison under the bill.

Last week, Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles said Catholics should ignore that law if it passes.

“Cardinal Mahony’s words are courageous and prophetic,” Tafoya said in a statement Friday.

Will Adams, spokesman for U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., said there was no need for concern by the churches.

“This section does not make any substantial changes in current law,” Adams said. “Cardinal Mahony is protesting a monster that does not exist.”

Adams said the bill is not intended to affect soup kitchens, shelters and other charitable services.
