Veruchi, Burbach earn top CTBA honors
The Colorado Thoroughbred Breeders Association on Saturday named Harry Veruchi its 2005 owner of the year after his horses earned $120,646 and Willard Burbach its breeder of the year with earnings of $306,188.
Cocoa Latte, bred by Linda Wood of Menoken Farms, was named the horse of the year, with earnings of $121,283. Cash Deposit, owned and leased by F.A. Heckendorf, was named champion thoroughbred stallion.
Metro’s Hoefs hits another grand slam in win
The Metro State baseball team got an eighth-inning grand slam from Mike Hoefs in rallying to beat St. Cloud State on Sunday at Auraria Field. The Roadrunners also defeated St. Cloud State 10-6 in the second game of the doubleheader.
St. Cloud State (1-5) led 6-5, but after Metro State’s Reece Gorman was hit by a pitch, Troy Spahn singled and Kyle Christensen reached on an error, Hoefs hit his third grand slam of the weekend. Metro State (4-6) also swept two games from St. Cloud State on Saturday.
New Mexico completes sweep of UNC
The New Mexico baseball team scored seven runs in the seventh inning en route to a 19-6 victory over Northern Colorado. It was UNC’s fifth consecutive loss.
New Mexico (12-4) completed a sweep of UNC this season, totaling 49 runs over three games. Northern Colorado (3-10) has lost nine straight games to New Mexico.
Adams State earns first win over Mesa State
The Adams State softball team used six home runs by six players to earn its first victory over Mesa State, 12-3, followed by a 10-7 victory in the second game of a doubleheader.
