Pueblo – Haxtun’s girls survived a cold start in their state tournament quarterfinal game Thursday against Eads at Colorado State University-Pueblo, but pulled out a 47-42 victory.

The third-seeded Bulldogs spotted Eads a 9-0 advantage, but battled back to tie the game at 33-33 after three periods.

Liz Fetzer gave Haxtun its first lead at 37-35 with a basket to open the fourth period, and Kara Dishman put the Bulldogs ahead to stay with two free throws.

“Defensive play wins games every time,” Kieley Wilson said after the Bulldogs took advantage of Eads’ foul trouble and made 21-of-30 free throws.

CALICHE 47, DOVE CREEK 38: Caliche cashed in at the free-throw line and shocked the second-seeded Bulldogs.

“They played good man-to-man defense on us,” Dove Creek coach Jim Buffington said. “We cut it to six in the second half and they just extended the defense out.”

Senior Megan Debus scored 22 points, including a 10-of-15 performance at the free-throw line, to lead the Buffaloes.

Caliche made Dove Creek pay dearly for its fouls, hitting 21-of-29 from the line.

NORTH PARK 51, CHR. FELLOWSHIP 30: North Park might have been in a rebuilding mode after losing its starters from last year’s state runner-up team, but the Wildcats still recorded an easy victory.

“This is how we’ve played all year, kind of scrappy,” North Park coach Randy Dodgson said. “Our guards are starting to play better.”

Christian Fellowship tied the game in the third quarter on three consecutive 3-pointers by Destiny Luna, but the Wildcats put the game away in the fourth.
