Steamboat Springs – Behind men’s 10K classical national champion John Stene, the University of Denver ski team took over the top spot Thursday at the NCAA Championships at Mount Werner.
Colorado, which got a 1-2 finish in the women’s 5K classical, jumped from sixth to second place after the second day of the four-day meet. Denver has 337 1/2 points; Colorado has 307. New Mexico is in third with 254 points, followed by Utah and Vermont tied for fourth with 253. Western State is in 16th place with 63.
Stene’s time of 27 minutes, 57.7 seconds topped Alaska-Fairbanks’ Marius Korthauer at 28:10.0 for the title. Denver’s Rene Reisshauer, the 2005 titlist in the event, finished fourth at 28:39.7.
In the women’s 5K classical, Colorado’s Jana Rehamaa was crowned the champ with a time of 16:29.6, followed by teammate Maria Grevsgaard at 16:36.0. Denver’s Anna-Karin Maeki finished fourth at 16:55.8.
Today’s third round features the men’s and women’s slalom events beginning at 5:15 p.m.
