Colorado sophomore Stephen Pifer finished fifth in the men’s 1-mile run with a time of 4 minutes, 14.81 seconds Saturday at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships at Randal Tyson Track Center at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Pifer trailed first-place Christian Smith of Kansas State, who clocked a time of 4:12.75.

Buffs sophomore Liza Pasciuto finished seventh in the women’s 3,000 meters in 9:21.10. Northern Arizona’s Johanna Nilsson won in 9:06.61.

Colorado finished 51st in the team standings with two points, while Texas won the title with 51.

CHL’s Eagles earn third division title

The Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League clinched the Northwest Division title with a 4-2 victory over the Fort Worth Brahmas at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland. The Eagles swept a weekend series with Fort Worth, winning 8-0 on Friday.

It was Colorado’s third consecutive division title since joining the CHL in 2003.

The Eagles’ Scott Polaski scored his 18th goal of the season to lead Colorado in a three-goal second period.

ASU wrestler Pitts third at DII championships

Adams State’s Brian Pitts took third in the 141-pound division Saturday at the NCAA Division II national championships at Koehler Fitness Center in Findlay, Ohio.

Pitts lost a 6-2 decision to Central Oklahoma’s Kyle Evans in the semifinals but rebounded in the consolation championship for a 6-4 decision over Minnesota State’s Zach Stevens.

Adams State had two other wrestlers place: Scott Cleve was sixth at 157 and Casey Woodall was eighth at 197. Western State had three wrestlers finish eighth: Zach Lee (157 pounds), Larry Wilbanks (165) and Camille DuPont (149).

Nebraska-Omaha won the team title with 117 points. Adams State was ninth (52), and Western State was 18th (17.5).
