An early morning blaze at a home on the 3700 block of Franklin killed an baby this morning.
Authorities say it may have been started by a space heater.
Firefighters were called to the home at 3:46 a.m. when the fire was rolling out of the windows, said Phil Champaign, Denver Fire Department spokesman.
Family members immediately told firefighters that the one-year-old girl was still inside the house and they tried to rescue her, Champaign said.
Three adults and two children escaped before the firefighters arrived. The family, which was renting the home, was using a space heater because the furnace wasn’t working, Champaign said.
The children were taken to Children’s Hospital. At least one of the adults, a man, was taken to University Hospital with burns.
Outside the small brick house were children”s toys, stuffed animals and a small tricyle, apparently thrown out into the yard during the fire rescue attempt.
