The Vail Town Council on Tuesday night approved Peter Knobel’s controversial redevelopment of the 38-year-old Crossroads complex on the edge of Vail Village.
Called Solaris, the project will include 69 condos, a three-screen movie theater, a 10-lane bowling alley and arcade and a public plaza with a skating rink. It will also include 55,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, $1.1 million in public art and 338 underground parking spaces.
“Our final plan goes to the heart of our commitment to creating the ultimate family-style, pro-business atmosphere,” said Knobel, principal of Crossroads East One, in a statement.
The new building will be 99.9 feet tall, among the tallest in the Vail Village. The town is requiring Knobel to build enough employee housing units to accommodate 12 people and to pay $442,000 in traffic impact fees.
Construction could begin as early as next spring.
The project could still be put before Vail voters if opponents gather signatures from 10 percent of registered voters – a minimum of 380 people – for a special June election.
