With a focus on competition for the backup quarterback job, the Broncos are scheduled to host Mike McMahon today.
McMahon, who was cut by Philadelphia on Monday, visited Minnesota on Wednesday and told reporters there that the Broncos and Vikings “are the most attractive situations for me and my style of play.” Vikings coach Brad Childress was McMahon’s offensive coordinator in Philadelphia.
Denver is looking for competition for Bradlee Van Pelt, and the Broncos may draft a quarterback in one of the middle rounds. McMahon was a fifth-round selection of the Detroit Lions in 2001.
Another Brown in fold
The recent trend of bringing in former Cleveland defensive linemen continued as the Broncos claimed Amon Gordon off waivers. Denver brought in five former Cleveland defensive linemen last year and two this offseason. Last week the Broncos signed defensive end Kenard Lang. All seven played for Denver defensive line/tackles coach Andre Patterson in Cleveland.
Cleveland selected the 6-foot-2, 305-pound Gordon in the fifth round of the 2004 draft. The former Stanford standout missed all of last season with a knee injury. When he was cut, he said there was one team he was hoping would claim him.
“Denver is, most definitely, the place I wanted to end up,” Gordon said. “For me to be another former Brown defensive linemen to end up in Denver is uncanny. All the guys have had success in Denver, and they love being there with Coach Patterson. I’m elated to have the chance they all had.”
Broncos on Moulds’ list
Buffalo recently gave receiver Eric Moulds permission to seek a trade. His agents contacted Denver and four other teams.
The Broncos’ interest likely will be muted because of the cost, Moulds’ age (he turns 33 in July) and the fact that the team will likely address its needs at receiver in the draft.
“Eric would love to play in Denver,” personal adviser Greg Johnson said. “He’d love to play for Mike Shanahan and play alongside Rod Smith. That’s a team that fits what he’s looking for.”
