Coloradans for Marriage, a group established to push for a marriage-defining state constitutional amendment, has kicked off its effort to gather the required signatures to put the issue on the November ballot.

With petition language finalized, volunteers Tuesday night began gathering signatures at Republican caucuses, said Jon Paul, executive director of the coalition of conservative groups spearheading the drive.

Although part of the group’s strategy centers on churches already in tune with the proposed amendment, which would define marriage as a union between one man and one woman, Paul said he expects to find broad support.

“This issue crosses over all kinds of traditional lines of demarcation,” he said.

The initiative needs to collect nearly 68,000 valid signatures by Aug. 7.

Sean Duffy of Coloradans for Fairness and Equality, which opposes the amendment, said that group already is looking ahead to the campaign battle.

“Just as we have a very robust grassroots network, we’ve always assumed the other team would use their network of congregations to get the signatures pretty rapidly,” he said. “I think they’ll be comfortably on the ballot.”
